Shore Radio Station Plans To Go Country

Rare format in NYC metro market

By MICHAEL L. • DIAMOND • September 9, 2010

So long, Lady Gaga. Hello, Lady Antebellum.

Press Communications LLC said Wednesday it plans to change the format of WHTG-FM 106.3 from Top 40 to country in an attempt to set itself apart in a crowded radio field.

The switch, scheduled to begin Sept. 15, would give Monmouth County listeners access to what the station calls country rock — songs by artists including Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney and Carrie Underwood.

"The essence of so much of today's country music, a lot of it is a combination of rock and blues," said Rich Morena, general manager and partner of Press Communications. "Why can't we make that format viable?"

Wall-based Press Communications operates six stations in Monmouth and Ocean counties. It isn't affiliated with the Asbury Park Press.

The company has been trying to improve its ratings for WHTG. The station in January 2009 changed to the Top 40 format after a decade in which it played alternative rock. It sparked protests from some devoted listeners, but Morena said its ratings improved.

Still, Morena said the station's Top 40 format faced challenges. Namely, it had to compete with bigger New York stations that had the power to attract celebrities to the studio. And listeners who didn't like a song on WHTG could simply punch up another Top 40 station.

"Every day we would be fighting to retain a fair share of these marketing dollars," executives said in a memo to employees. "That is not a smart way to conduct business."

The new strategy:

WHTG and WBBO-FM 106.5, to be called Thunder 106, will simulcast the country music broadcast, giving the station a reach that extends nearly from Brooklyn to Cape May County.
