More on Fete De Swifty!

There are only 20 more days until the 7th Annual Fete de Swifty!

A bit about what happened at the 6th Annual Fete de Swifty:
Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Columnist Liz Smith, Mayor’s Fund Board Chair Rob Speyer and President Megan Sheekey today kicked off the Sixth Annual Fete de Swifty benefit in Manhattan. The event, founded by Liz Smith and hosted by the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, raises money to support the Family Justice Center Initiative, administered by the Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence. The initiative reduces barriers faced by victims of domestic abuse, allowing them to access a variety of services, such as prosecutorial, counseling, housing and financial assistance, under one roof. Mayor Bloomberg opened the first Family Justice Center in Brooklyn in 2005. In 2007, a second center opened in Queens, and the City’s third center will open in the Bronx this winter 2010.

This year’s Fete de Swifty Honorary Chairs were Tim Gunn, Mariska Hargitay and Nicole Kidman.

Our Annual Benefit Gears Up!

Help support the Family Justice Center Initiative and New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) youth programs by purchasing tickets to our upcoming benefit, taking place on September 29th. This year’s honorary chairs are Mary J. Blige, Tim Gunn, Mariska Hargitay, Nicole Kidman, John Starks, Steve Stoute, and Malik Yoba.

Fundraising proceeds will aid the City’s Family Justice Centers in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens, which have served over 45,500 victims of domestic violence to date with approximately 1,600 new clients each month. This year, the benefit will also support NYCHA youth initiatives, including literacy and health programs for youth aged one to three and afterschool activities for grades K through three.
To purchase tickets or donate, go to www.nyc.gov/fund or call 212-788-7794.

How has your life been touched by breast cancer?

My aunt had a serious case of breast cancer. The whole experience, including the surgery and its after-effects, was very painful for her physically and emotionally. I have empathy for those with breast cancer and their family members, and I want to do whatever I can to help ease the suffering and promote a cure.
